The second single from gothic rockers Evanescence is a piano ballad called “Lithium”, which was written by singer Amy Lee.
Taken from the bands sophomore effort The Open Door, “Lithium” is used as a metaphor for the battle between happiness and sorrow. In this case, Lee has been keeping herself down for so long, she no longer sees happiness as a positive thing. She knows this and it’s a struggle to break free.
This song is great at showcasing Amy Lee’s vocal abilities. It’s deep and appears to be very personal. It gets a little repetitive though, it would have worked great as a two minute album intro.
